Coaching FAQs

What is coaching?

“We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone…and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one’s life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something.”
Sandra Day O’Connor, Alzheimer Study Group Member & Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice

A coach partners with you to explore possibilities and create processes that help you to maximize your personal and professional potential. O’Connor’s statement could not be more appropriate to introduce you to coaching and to help determine if coaching is a good fit for you and/or your company. Countless research, studies and human experience have shown that there are a greater percentage of goals met when supported by accountability.  Simply put, coaching accomplishes many tasks but the most important is to hold you accountable for attaining your goals.

Why is coaching important to you?

Coaching is important because it completes your “success team.” Whether you seek life, executive or business coaching, it is important to embrace the concept of having a “success team.” For example, a “success team” for small businesses includes an attorney, bookkeeper, certified public accountant, marketing & sales support, a social media expert, and an effective coach.  This is a team you can trust to support you on your journey to accomplishing your goals. A coach encourages and expands effectiveness in both business and personal development. Coaching helps to identify obstacles that can hinder progress, promote potential and opportunities, develop infrastructure, and create accountability which leads to success.

In order to reach the fullest potential as individuals, executives or leaders, it is also important to have a “success team” comprised of mentors, positive people in your inner circle, and yes, astrategic coach.  A solid “success team” is just as critical to growth and achieving goals as water is to the health of the human body.  True success cannot happen without it.  Strategic coaching paves the way through communication, celebration, and the sharing of resources. An strategic coach helps you create balance, plan your growth  and challenges you to connect your purpose to your passion.

How does coaching differ from consulting and counseling?

Professional coaching focuses on a client’s life and/or business and includes developing a relationship of trust, expanding the potential of the client/business, effective communication, and assisting the client in setting and maintaining clear objectives.  By expanding client potential, a world of possibilities are discovered and the coach can then guide the client into developing structures and systems to support the goals and objectives..  Coaches look at all areas of a client’s personal and professional life to provide support through a strategic process of communication. It is a coaches responsibility to guide, inspire and create accountability while it is the client’s responsibility to establish and honor the agenda, the goals, the process, and the plan of action.

Consulting is the process of analyzing problems, recommending solutions, frequently providing reports and/or implementing  solutions.

Counseling delves into the past but the practice of coaching processes where you are and sets clearly defined goals to move you toward a pre-determined destination.

“Coaches are change experts who help leaders take responsibility to maximize their own potential.”  – Tony Stoltzfus
